Level 1: Mavoko Local Problems

I have classified Mavoko local problems into three categories: poor infrastructure and related services, poverty amidst plenty and environmental pollution.

The first Mavoko local problem is the Poor infrastructure and related services:

The constituency lacks appropriate road network and has poor transport system ... has shortage of domestic water supply... lacks solid and wastewater management system ... lacks good schools … experiences insecurity at home and on the streets ... has poor living conditions and urban sprawl … experiences unemployment and poor working conditions within an industrial town … has poor health services … is overpopulated …and many more

Infrastructure Solutions:

I will build infrastructure using labor intensive methods to create jobs and improve services. Create jobs by building infrastructure using local labour.

The second Mavoko problem is Poverty amidst plenty:

We live in a rich industrial town yet there is widespread poverty in Mavoko. Machakos is the 5th or the 6th richest county after Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Mombasa, Meru. Mavoko contributes the largest share to this generation of wealth. Yet the people of Mavoko are poor, have low and poor stock of infrastructure and services are terrible. This is because our enemies have built an extractive economy – they take away our natural resources without compensation or replenishment.

Poverty Solutions:

I will change this extractive economy and build an inclusive and sustainable economy around the industries and our natural resources including our people; a sustainable inclusive economy that shares our wealth with our people. I am an engineer with experience in people-centered development. I know how development, finance and economy work together for people.

The Third problem is extreme Environmental Pollution:

Mavoko is an industrial hub and has two major urban centers: Athi River and Mlolongo and others such as Kyumbi. It has a high level of pollution in the air (poisonous gas emissions, dust and noise), in the ground and in Athi River water.

Main polluters are vehicle emissions, industrial activities and their poor waste disposal system. There is no domestic solid and wastewater disposal system. The towns are very dirty, streets strewn with garbage and drainage systems are clogged. Street vending magnifies this problem.

Pollution Solutions:

I will work with the polluters to provide mitigation measures and stop illegal pollution. We will plant trees everywhere. Clean River Athi and all streets by community efforts. End corruption.

What is the solution ? My 5 year strategy for Mavoko
