Education & Credentials

Engineer Mumina Wa-Kyendo's Academic Foundation

Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) - First Class Honours

University of Nairobi, 1988

Graduated with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi. This distinction reflects not only technical competence but a deep commitment to excellence and rigorous problem-solving. Civil engineering provides foundational knowledge in infrastructure design, project management, and the physics of how systems work—knowledge that directly applies to governance.

The engineering discipline teaches systematic thinking: define the problem, research solutions, design systems, implement carefully, and verify results. These principles are precisely what Kenya needs in governance.

Master of Science (Transport Engineering)

University of Nairobi, 1991 | DAAD Scholarship Recipient

Earned a prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Scholarship to pursue advanced studies in Transport Engineering. This MSc involved specialized research into road pavement performance and maintenance—directly applicable to Mavoko's infrastructure needs.

Key Research: "Flexible Road Pavement Performance and Maintenance Studies" (1991) - This thesis work demonstrates expertise in the very infrastructure systems that Mavoko desperately needs: roads that are built right, perform well, and can be maintained cost-effectively.

Transport engineering expertise is particularly critical for a constituency like Mavoko. Transportation networks determine access to markets, schools, hospitals, and economic opportunity. Without adequate transport infrastructure, communities remain isolated and impoverished.

Master of Business Administration (Finance)

United States International University, Nairobi, 2007

Completed an MBA with specialization in Finance during an active career at the African Development Bank. This qualification demonstrates ability to manage complex financial systems and understand how capital flows drive development.

Thesis Focus: "The Potential Use of Private Finance (PPP) in the Development of City Roads in Nairobi" - This research explored innovative financing mechanisms for infrastructure. For Mavoko, understanding how to leverage private sector investment and public-private partnerships could unlock resources for critical development projects.

Many constituencies fail to develop because leaders lack the financial literacy to access available resources or negotiate favorable terms with development partners. This MBA ensures that Mavoko will have an MP who understands finance, can manage budgets responsibly, and can access innovative funding for development.

Professional Certifications & Memberships

REng - Registered Engineer

Registration with the Engineers Registration Board of Kenya. This credential requires not just technical competence but demonstrated commitment to professional ethics, public safety, and accountability. It represents a personal commitment to standards and integrity.

MCArb - Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

Certificate in Law of Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution. This qualification reflects expertise in navigating complex disputes and finding equitable solutions—skills essential for a parliamentarian who must bridge divides and build consensus.

Corporate Member of the premier professional body for engineers in Kenya. Membership ensures continued professional development and alignment with international standards of practice.

Educational Philosophy

My education was not accumulated for personal prestige. Each qualification represents a commitment to understanding specific dimensions of how the world works: how to design systems (civil engineering), how transportation networks enable development (transport engineering), how capital flows drive progress (MBA finance), and how to resolve disputes equitably (arbitration).

I believe leaders must be learners. Since completing formal education, I have maintained commitment to continued learning and development. The challenges facing Mavoko and Kenya are too significant for a leader who stopped learning years ago. I approach the position of MP as an opportunity to continue learning while applying every ounce of knowledge I have accumulated.

Why This Education Matters for Mavoko

Mavoko needs infrastructure. We need roads that work, water systems that provide clean water, electricity systems that are reliable. We need these systems designed by people who understand engineering, built by people with integrity, and maintained sustainably. My education ensures I can deliver this.

Beyond infrastructure, Mavoko needs leadership grounded in rigorous thinking. The engineering and financial education I have received provides frameworks for analyzing complex problems, identifying root causes, and designing evidence-based solutions. These are exactly the frameworks Kenya needs.

Most importantly, my education has taught me humility. I know that the more you learn, the more you realize how much remains unknown. This humility is essential for effective leadership. It means I will listen to experts, collaborate with knowledge holders, and remain open to learning from Mavoko residents about their specific needs and aspirations.
